Rap whose production borrows the grammar of a movie score: sweeping strings, woodwind motifs, brass stabs and dynamic builds standing in for a static loop. Producers think like composers, assigning instruments to characters and pacing beats like cues. Sound is widescreen and cinematic, often noir, samurai or dystopian in tone, with hooks subordinate to mood.
History
Crystallized when RZA scored Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog (1999), applying Bernstein and Mancini ideas to hip-hop, the same year Dr. Dre framed 2001 as 'a movie.' El-P extended it into industrial dystopia on Cancer 4 Cure (2012), and Czarface (2013) fused comic-book scoring with boom-bap, cementing producer-as-composer as a lasting mode.
