Festival R&B is R&B scaled for outdoor stages, big lighting rigs and mixed-genre audiences: atmospheric intros, bass-heavy drops, singalong hooks, live drums or DJ transitions, dramatic builds and vocals that can cut across a crowd. It often overlaps pop-R&B, alt-R&B, EDM, trap-soul and electronic soul. The songs still center emotion, but the arrangements are designed to project beyond the bedroom into the field.
History
The rise of Coachella-era genre mixing, EDM-pop crossovers, streaming festivals and R&B's alternative wave made festival R&B a recognizable lane. The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, SZA, Miguel, H.E.R., Daniel Caesar, Kaytranada, Disclosure collaborations and Beyonce's festival-scale performances all shaped the idea. The style reflects a live-market reality: R&B artists now need intimate songs that can also command massive, visually produced spaces.
