History
Italy's Rhapsody (later Rhapsody of Fire), led by Luca Turilli and Alex Staropoli with vocalist Fabio Lione, fused Malmsteen-style neoclassicism, Helloween power metal and full film-score orchestration into the 'Emerald Sword Saga,' with 1998's Symphony of Enchanted Lands the genre's cornerstone. Nightwish (Finland) brought operatic-soprano-fronted fantasy bombast to a mass audience via Oceanborn and Once, while Therion pioneered choir-and-orchestra metal from a darker angle. The Tolkien-and-D&D lineage runs through Blind Guardian's epic balladry, Germany's Haggard (medieval/baroque), and modern torchbearers Gloryhammer, Twilight Force and Fellowship, plus Italy's Turilli/Lione projects - keeping the orchestra-plus-quest formula a thriving European institution.
