Fantasy Metal is the swords-and-sorcery strain of Power Metal: galloping double-bass drumming at 160-200 BPM, twin major-key guitar harmonies and neoclassical sweep-picked runs, soaring clean tenor vocals stacked into anthemic choirs, and lush keyboard/orchestral pads evoking castles, quests and ancient battles. Productions are bright and polished with epic mid-song key changes, fast tremolo riffing under hummable melodies, and triumphant fist-in-air choruses. The mood is heroic and escapist rather than dark, prizing melody, virtuosity and storytelling over aggression.
History
The template was set in the late 1980s as Helloween's Keeper of the Seven Keys albums (1987-88) fused speed-metal velocity with bright melody and fantastical lyrics, while Germany's Blind Guardian moved from speed metal toward Tolkien- and epic-fiction concept records that defined the literary side of the style. Through the 1990s the European mainland scene exploded: Hamburg-area bands plus Sweden's HammerFall, Finland's Stratovarius and Italy's Rhapsody (later Rhapsody of Fire) built a polished, keyboard-rich, story-driven sound on labels like Nuclear Blast and Noise. The early 2000s peak saw whole albums conceived as fantasy sagas, with bands such as Gamma Ray, Sonata Arctica and the UK's DragonForce pushing speed and theatrics further; the style remains a thriving global scene with strong followings in Europe, Japan and Latin America.
