History
Post-Star Wars symphonic revivalism flowed straight into fantasy: Basil Poledouris's brawny Conan the Barbarian (1982) and James Horner's Willow (1988) and Krull (1983) built muscular orchestral worlds of myth. The genre's golden age arrived with John Williams' Harry Potter (2001) and its celesta-lit "Hedwig's Theme," and Howard Shore's monumental Lord of the Rings, which together made grand thematic fantasy scoring a blockbuster staple. Patrick Doyle, Alexandre Desplat and James Newton Howard carried the tradition through later Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films, keeping the leitmotivic adventure score central to franchise fantasy cinema.
