Fado is Portuguese urban song built around the Portuguese guitarra, viola accompaniment, stately rubato or measured pulse, and a vocal style that can move from intimate hush to dignified ache. Saudade is the headline emotion, but good fado also carries irony, defiance, and a sense that fate has already finished speaking and now wants an encore.
History
Emerging in Lisbon’s urban lower-class and bohemian environments, fado became national emblem and international export through singers such as Amália Rodrigues. Post-dictatorship and late-20th-century revivals refreshed the style without severing its ties to classic repertory, neighborhood houses, and the expressive primacy of text.
