Experimental Indie Pop

tagStarted 2004Peak 2010-2018Last big hit still active

Indie pop that breaks its own rules: unconventional song forms, dense sampling and electronics, polyrhythms, collage textures and treated, sometimes pitched vocals. Hooks survive but arrive sideways—through warped loops, abrupt shifts and unusual timbres—favoring restless invention and studio-as-instrument craft over verse-chorus convention, while staying melodic enough to be pop.

History

Animal Collective's psychedelic sample-collage 'Merriweather Post Pavilion' (2009) became the lane's touchstone, with Dirty Projectors' angular vocal interplay and Sufjan Stevens' maximalist orchestration nearby. Streaming-era auteurs like Caroline Polachek and Dirty Projectors kept pushing pop's structure and texture into stranger, more experimental territory.
