Ethno-Jazz blends jazz improvisation with regional scales, rhythms, instruments and song forms from beyond the standard American jazz vocabulary. It includes Middle Eastern oud-jazz, Nordic folk-jazz, Armenian and Balkan jazz, Indian-jazz, African-jazz and spiritual world-jazz. The label is broad and sometimes clumsy, but useful for music where improvisation and cultural source material share equal weight.

History

Don Cherry, Yusef Lateef, Pharoah Sanders and others opened jazz toward global instruments and modes, while labels such as ECM supported cross-border chamber-jazz sounds. Later artists including Rabih Abou-Khalil, Anouar Brahem, Dhafer Youssef, Jan Garbarek, Tigran Hamasyan, Ibrahim Maalouf and Avishai Cohen developed distinct regional jazz languages. Ethno-jazz now spans conservatory, festival and experimental scenes.
