Ethiopian pop combines modal Ethiopian melodies with dance-band instrumentation, funk and soul inflection, keyboards, horns, and strong vocal personalities. Even at its most commercial, it retains a distinctive melodic contour and emotional color that makes it instantly different from generic global pop.

History

The style grew in imperial Addis Ababa through orchestras, nightclub bands, radio, and recording labels before being disrupted by political change and exile; stars such as Tilahun Gessesse, Mahmoud Ahmed, Aster Aweke, and later Teddy Afro, Gigi, and Neway Debebe carried different phases of the tradition, from golden-age dance-band repertoire to diaspora production and modern mass-audience revival.
