Ethereal Indie is atmospheric indie music built from floating vocals, chiming or treated guitars, reverb-heavy production, slow-motion rhythm, and a mood of spectral beauty. It overlaps dream pop and ethereal wave but usually stays closer to indie songcraft than gothic ritual or ambient abstraction. The signature sound is a human voice turned into light passing through stained glass.
History
Ethereal Indie grew from post-punk, goth atmospherics, 4AD's production aesthetic, and dream-pop experimentation in the 1980s, with Cocteau Twins as the central model and This Mortal Coil, Dead Can Dance, and A.R. Kane expanding the vocabulary. The 1990s brought His Name Is Alive, Mazzy Star, Love Spirals Downwards, Low, and Mojave 3 into adjacent soft-focus zones, while later artists such as Beach House, Grouper, Julianna Barwick, Weyes Blood, and Cigarettes After Sex adapted ethereal textures to indie pop, ambient folk, and slowcore. Its influence is enormous in modern "hazy" music: whenever a vocal becomes more atmosphere than narrator, Ethereal Indie is nearby.
