Wiley's frostbitten blueprint for grime: icy, sparse, almost melody-free instrumentals built from cold synth stabs, hollow eight-bar loops and skeletal drums he likened to feeling 'cold-hearted.' The 'devil mixes' stripped drums for bass and space, giving MCs room to ride. Hypnotic, minimal and glacial, it set grime's emotional and rhythmic template.
History
Coined by Wiley ('Eskiboy') in East London around 2002, eski-beat named grime's coldest strain after the Eskimo idea of icy detachment. His instrumentals Eskimo, Igloo and Ice Rink circulated on dubplate and pirate radio; Igloo became the bed for Wot Do U Call It?, his 2004 chart breakout that interrogated the scene's very name and identity.
