History
After Purcell’s foundational work, English-language opera developed unevenly until the 20th century, when Britten, Menotti in English, Barber, Carlisle Floyd, Adams, Heggie, and many others gave the language a durable operatic repertory. In Britain and North America especially, English-language opera became a key site for contemporary subject matter, locally legible drama, and educational accessibility.
