Cold, retro-futurist fusion of early-'80s analog synth-pop and electro with punk and art-rock attitude. Cheap drum-machine claps, monophonic synth riffs, deadpan or sneering vocals and a deliberately trashy, fashion-forward sleaze. Knowingly arty and minimal, it revives Numan-era textures with new-wave swagger and a downtown, performance-art edge.
History
Coalesced around 1999-2002 in New York and Europe as a self-conscious revival of analog electro and synth-punk. Fischerspooner's 'Emerge' and Felix da Housecat's Kittenz and Thee Glitz (2001) defined the sound; Peaches, Miss Kittin and Ladytron brought provocation and style. Short-lived but influential, it fed directly into the 2000s dance-rock and indie-electro waves.
