Electroclash Pop

tagStarted 1998Peak 2001-2004Last big hit 2006

A retro-futurist fusion of 80s electro and new wave with 90s techno and electro-house, wrapped in art-school camp and deadpan, often spoken or robotic vocals. Sleazy analog bass, stiff drum-machine beats, vocoders, and ironic glamour drive a confrontational, performance-art-tinged dancefloor pop full of attitude.

History

Coalesced in 1998 around Miss Kittin & The Hacker's icy electro tracks, then exploded via the 2001 New York Electroclash Festival and labels like International DeeJay Gigolo and Ersatz Audio. Fischerspooner, Felix da Housecat, Peaches, and Ladytron brought it brief mainstream notoriety before it dissolved by mid-decade.
