Electroclash is a deliberately trashy collision of electro, synthpop, punk attitude, fashion-club performance, and deadpan sexuality. Its tracks use brittle drum machines, vintage synth hooks, monotone or sneering vocals, simple basslines, and a knowing mix of glamour and amateurism. It sounds like early-1980s electronic pop dragged through downtown art school, queer nightlife, and 2000s club irony.
History
Electroclash formed in late-1990s and early-2000s New York, Detroit, Berlin, Munich, London, and Paris circles, with Larry Tee's festival branding helping give the scene a name. Fischerspooner, Miss Kittin & The Hacker, Peaches, Adult., Chicks on Speed, Ladytron, Felix da Housecat, Tiga, and Le Tigre made the sound visible across clubs, fashion, and indie media. Its mainstream moment faded quickly, but its DNA fed bloghouse, indie sleaze, hyperpop performance, queer club pop, and a later revival around archival compilations and TikTok nostalgia.
