Electro-R&B uses electronic production as a visible feature rather than background polish: synth bass, drum machines, vocoders, Auto-Tune, glitchy edits, cold pads, club pulses and vocals that move between human warmth and machine texture. It can be pop-facing, alternative or futuristic. The tension is the point: R&B's intimate voice placed inside synthetic environments that make desire feel digital, nocturnal or unreal.
History
Prince, Zapp, Jam & Lewis and 1980s electro-funk made electronic R&B possible, while Timbaland, The Neptunes, Rodney Jerkins and Missy Elliott pushed digital textures into late-1990s and 2000s R&B. Later The-Dream, Kelela, FKA twigs, The Weeknd, Tinashe, Dawn Richard and Miguel expanded the style into alternative and club territory. Electro-R&B became central once laptops, Auto-Tune and synth minimalism changed the default studio.
