Electro is machine-funk dance music built around drum machines, syncopated bass, robotic vocals, futuristic synths, and a crisp breakbeat or 808 pulse. It differs from electro house: classic electro is tied to hip-hop, Kraftwerk, funk, breakdance, and Detroit techno lineage rather than big-room house drops. The best electro feels both funky and synthetic, with human swing inside mechanical surfaces.
History
Electro emerged through "Planet Rock," Kraftwerk influence, early hip-hop production, and the Roland TR-808, then branched through New York, LA, Detroit, Miami, and European scenes. Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force, Cybotron, Hashim, Egyptian Lover, Newcleus, Man Parrish, Herbie Hancock, and Jonzun Crew shaped the first wave; Drexciya, Dopplereffekt, Aux 88, DMX Krew, Anthony Rother, Carl Finlow, and DJ Stingray shaped revival and modern forms. It remains central to underground electronic music because it sits between funk, techno, hip-hop, and sci-fi design.
