Pop songs whose job is to teach: grammar, math, science and civics turned into hooks designed to stick in memory. Jazzy or rock arrangements carry mnemonic lyrics, the chorus a rule you'll recite for life. Function over flash, but the melodies are real and warm, built so a fact rides home on a tune you can't shake.
History
Schoolhouse Rock! launched the form in 1973 when ad exec David McCall hired jazzman Bob Dorough to set multiplication tables to music for ABC's Saturday mornings; "Conjunction Junction" and "I'm Just a Bill" became classroom staples. They Might Be Giants revived the format with science albums for kids in the 2000s, winning a Grammy.
