Festival-scale electronic dance music welded to rock: detuned supersaw leads, screaming synth drops and sidechained kicks dropped where a guitar solo used to sit, often over distorted riffs, double-kick drums and screamed or anthemic vocals. Built for main-stage catharsis, it trades EDM's build-and-drop for rock's verse-chorus payoff.

History

Took shape around 2009-2012 as the EDM boom collided with rock and metal. Pendulum and Enter Shikari fused drum-and-bass and dubstep with hardcore; Linkin Park's A Thousand Suns (2010) and Living Things (2012) leaned on synth drops, and Korn's The Path of Totality (2011) recruited Skrillex and Noisia. By mid-decade Bring Me the Horizon carried the drop-driven hybrid into arenas.
