EBM, short for Electronic Body Music, is hard physical electronic dance music made from sequenced bass, shouted vocals, industrial discipline, punk aggression, and stripped drum-machine drive. It is more minimal and muscular than synthpop, more dance-oriented than early industrial, and less ornate than later dark electro. The style is direct: command vocals, machine rhythm, body pressure.
History
EBM formed in the early 1980s around DAF, Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Liaisons Dangereuses, The Neon Judgement, Portion Control, A Split-Second, The Klinik, Borghesia, Vomito Negro, and related Belgian, German, British, and European scenes. Front 242 popularized the term, while Nitzer Ebb turned it into a global industrial-club force. EBM influenced techno, industrial rock, futurepop, aggrotech, and the 2010s/2020s EBM-techno revival.
