Drone Ambient is ambient music built from sustained tones, slow harmonic change, feedback, bowed textures, organ-like synths, and deep resonance. It minimizes rhythm and melody so listeners focus on overtones, pressure, duration, and microscopic movement. The mood can be sacred, bleak, oceanic, or physically overwhelming, but the form depends on patience and immersion.
History
Drone Ambient draws from La Monte Young's minimalism, kosmische music, Indian classical influence, tape music, and dark ambient, then developed through experimental electronic and guitar-drone scenes. Stars of the Lid, Brian Eno, Robert Rich, Steve Roach, Eliane Radigue, William Basinski, Loscil, Tim Hecker, Rafael Anton Irisarri, Chihei Hatakeyama, and Windy & Carl made drone a central ambient vocabulary. It remains strong in sound art, meditation listening, experimental festivals, and long-form digital releases.
