Dream R&B Pop

Atmospheric, slow-burning R&B-pop: hazy reverbed synths, cavernous space, sparse skittering drums and intimate, multitracked falsetto vocals. The mood is nocturnal, sensual and emotionally raw, drifting and cinematic rather than upbeat. It reframes soul as something cold, dreamy and confessional, prizing texture, vulnerability and a neon-lit, after-hours melancholy.
History
Dream R&B pop emerged in the early 2010s as 'alternative R&B,' when The Weeknd's House of Balloons and Frank Ocean's Nostalgia, Ultra (both 2011) recast soul through hazy, atmospheric, indie-influenced production. SZA, Daniel Caesar and Solange extended its dreamy, confessional reach, drawing on Sade's earlier slinky, mood-first blueprint.
