Dragon Metal

Dragon Metal is the most extreme, hyper-fast wing of fantasy Power Metal, built around dragon-and-quest imagery and breakneck tempos that can top 200 BPM. Hallmarks are relentless blast-like double-kick drumming, dueling lead guitars firing arpeggio sweeps, tapping cascades and 8-bit-style 'video-game' melodies, glittering symphonic keyboards, and high clean tenor vocals layered into bombastic choirs. Productions are maximalist and treble-bright, packed with neoclassical runs, abrupt key changes and triumphant gallop riffs. The mood is exhilarating, cartoonishly heroic and unapologetically over-the-top.
History
The strand grew out of late-1990s European power metal as bands leaned hard into dragon mythology and ever-faster playing. Italy's Rhapsody framed grand symphonic sagas of warriors and dragons across the Emerald Sword cycle, while London's DragonForce (formed 1999, originally DragonHeart) codified the cartoon-speed extreme with twin shredders Herman Li and Sam Totman; their 2006 single 'Through the Fire and Flames,' boosted by Guitar Hero III, became the style's calling card and pulled the dragon aesthetic into the mainstream. Finland's Stratovarius and Dragonland, plus the symphonic excess of Luca Turilli's projects, fed the same vein. The label is informal—drawn from band names, album art and lyrics—but it usefully marks the speed-and-spectacle peak of fantasy power metal, still carried today by DragonForce and successors like Gloryhammer.
