Downtempo Pop

Slow, groove-led electronic pop: warm bass, brushed downbeat drums, jazzy Rhodes and string pads under soulful, unhurried vocals. Production is plush and cinematic, built for lounges and headphones alike. It trades trip-hop's menace for golden-hour serenity, prizing texture, melody and an immersive, mid-tempo cool.
History
Emerging from mid-1990s European chillout and trip-hop, downtempo pop softened the beats into lounge-friendly sophistication. France's Air, Britain's Zero 7 and Morcheeba and Norway's Royksopp brought lush vocal-led albums to mainstream playlists across the late 1990s and 2000s, later carried forward by producers like Bonobo into the 2010s.
