Downtempo is slow-to-mid-tempo electronic groove music built for listening, lounging, and head-nod movement rather than peak club release. It commonly uses breakbeats, dub bass, jazz chords, soul samples, brushed percussion, soft synths, and cinematic textures. The lane is broad enough to include trip-hop, lounge, chillout, and beat-scene influence, but the common trait is relaxed rhythmic gravity.
History
Downtempo grew from Bristol trip-hop, acid-jazz, dub, Balearic DJ culture, IDM, and 1990s lounge compilations. Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Nightmares on Wax, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Thievery Corporation, Air, Zero 7, Bonobo, Boards of Canada, Moby, and Tosca made slow electronic albums commercially viable and critically visible. Streaming playlists later reframed downtempo as background, study, cafe, wellness, and boutique-festival music, but the core still comes from beatmaking, dub space, and sample craft.
