Funereal, minor-key heaviness built on Black Sabbath's slowest moments: mournful midtempo riffs, doomy bell-tolling chords, and clean wailing vocals that carry tragedy rather than aggression. Less metallic than doom metal, it keeps a bluesy, organ-shadowed rock feel — crushing volume, crawling tempos, and a constant sense of dread and loss.
History
Pentagram demoed proto-doom riffs in Virginia from 1971, but the style crystallized when Saint Vitus and Trouble emerged in the early 1980s. Wino Weinrich's tenure in Vitus and The Obsessed gave it a touchstone voice. Saint Vitus's 1986 Born Too Late became its anthem, and the Maryland scene plus labels like SST carried it forward into a durable underground cult.
