The broad umbrella for the Dominican Republic's urban-music movement, spanning dembow, Dominican trap, urban merengue/mambo and reggaeton-influenced styles, all sharing Dominican Spanish slang, street themes and a percussive, bass-forward aesthetic. Productions range from skeletal dembow loops to 808-heavy trap and melodic urbano, unified by rapid-fire flows, chant hooks and a raw, DIY barrio sensibility. Vocals switch between rapped, chanted and autotuned singing, and the mood is brash, streetwise and dance-driven. It is the ecosystem from which the country's global urban exports emerge.
History
Dominican urban music took shape in the 2000s as dembow, homegrown rap and trap grew in Santo Domingo and Santiago barrios and among the diaspora, distinct from Puerto Rico's reggaeton mainstream. Dembow's explosion behind El Alfa anchored the scene, while rappers and trapper-singers like Vakero, Mozart La Para, Lomiiel and Quimico Ultra Mega, and provocateurs like Tokischa and Yailin, broadened its range. Streaming, YouTube and TikTok carried Dominican slang and rhythms worldwide, and by the late 2010s and 2020s the country had become one of Latin music's most influential urban hubs, feeding collaborations across reggaeton, pop and hip-hop.
