Mid-tempo grooves glide rather than thump, the Philly sound's polish stretched to seven-minute dancefloor symphonies.

History

Crystallized at Philadelphia International around Gamble, Huff and Thom Bell, whose house band MFSB scored TSOP as the Soul Train theme in 1974. The lush Philly template — strings, sophisticated harmony, propulsive rhythm — became disco's blueprint, exported through groups like the O'Jays, Tavares and First Choice before harder Euro-disco took over.
