Digital Dub is dub made with drum machines, samplers, synth bass, MIDI sequencing, digital delays, and laptop-era production. It keeps dub's bass-and-space core but replaces the live-band tape-room feel with programmed riddims and crisp electronic pressure. The result can be rootsy, industrial, psychedelic, or cleanly club-ready.
History
The digital turn followed the 1980s dancehall shift into computerized riddims, then spread through UK dub studios and labels. Mad Professor, Adrian Sherwood, Dub Syndicate, Alpha & Omega, Zion Train, Twilight Circus Dub Sound System, Vibronics, Dubmatix, O.B.F, Panda Dub, King Earthquake, and Iration Steppas all pushed digital dub into new systems. Its methods underpin modern steppers, dub techno, dubstep's low-end culture, and festival bass.
