Desert Blues / Tishoumaren centers Saharan guitar music, especially Tuareg ishumar songs of exile, resistance, longing and community. Electric guitars repeat hypnotic riffs over handclaps, calabash, bass, drums and modal vocal lines. The term "desert blues" is partly an outside comparison to American blues; tishoumaren names a more specific Tuareg social history of displacement, rebellion and modern identity.

History

Tuareg musicians developed tishoumaren in camps, exile communities and political struggle, using guitars as portable tools for news, memory and morale. Tinariwen became the international gateway, while Bombino, Mdou Moctar, Terakaft, Tamikrest and Les Filles de Illighadad expanded the field. Ali Farka Touré represents a related Malian desert-blues lineage, connecting Songhai, Fulani and other regional traditions with blues-like guitar phrasing.
