Saharan Tuareg guitar music - 'assouf' or 'tishoumaren' - built on hypnotic, looping electric-guitar lines, call-and-response Tamasheq vocals, handclaps and a swaying camel-gait pulse. Trance-like and modal, it bridges Malian blues and Western rock, with later acts adding Hendrix-style fuzz and full-band power. Spare, droning, deeply hypnotic.

History

Tinariwen formed in 1979 among exiled Tuareg fighters in Libyan camps, electrifying nomadic song into rebel anthems. Ali Farka Touré had already linked Malian music to the blues globally. From the 2001 Festival au Désert, Tinariwen, Tamikrest, Bombino and Mdou Moctar - the 'Hendrix of the Sahara' - carried desert blues onto world rock stages.
