History
As Dominican dembow broke out of the barrio in the late 2010s, artists and producers blended it with mainstream urbano to reach wider audiences, and the biggest reggaeton and pop stars began chasing the sound. El Alfa's star-studded albums, Chimbala's chart hits and Tokischa's provocative crossovers pulled dembow into the urbano mainstream, while Puerto Rican and global acts like Rauw Alejandro and Jey One folded dembow into their releases. Streaming platforms, TikTok virality and Latin-industry investment turned dembow urbano into a fixture of the wider urbano ecosystem, blurring the line between hardcore dembow and pan-Latin club music.
