Deep Meditation
Located in 1 route
Meditation music aimed at prolonged, deep contemplative states: very long, slow, drone-anchored pieces with sustained tones, tanpura-like shimmer, low flutes, bells and minimal harmonic change, built to dissolve the sense of time and support extended sitting. Rhythmic and melodic activity is kept to an absolute minimum so nothing snags the attention, and the low, enveloping textures encourage slow breathing and stillness. The intention is transcendence rather than pleasant background, distinguishing it from lighter relaxation fare.
History
The deep, drone-leaning end of meditation music was shaped by Steven Halpern's tuned sustained work and, crucially, by the Osho ashram musicians Deuter and Anugama, whose long trance-meditation pieces (heartbeat drums, sustained flute and synth) were designed for extended practice. Karunesh and Tibetan-influenced players such as Nawang Khechog extended the palette, while ambient composers like Robert Rich contributed long, immersive drones suited to deep sitting. Streaming's endless meditation uploads and retreat culture kept the form alive, cross-listing it with drone, mantra and Tibetan-bowl meditation.
