Deep Drum & Bass

Deep DnB is sparse, heavy, and low-lit: sub-bass as architecture, drums with lots of negative space, and melodies or textures that stay moody rather than lush. It is less songful than liquid and less technical-display-driven than neurofunk.

History

The sound took shape as producers such as dBridge, Alix Perez, Calibre, Skeptical, Monty, and Break drew from dub, halftime thinking, tech aesthetics, and advanced sound-system design. Labels like Exit, 1985, and similar camps made deep DnB one of the genre’s most influential modern currents.
