Death Rock is gothic punk's rawer, death-obsessed branch: skeletal guitar, dramatic vocals, horror imagery, tribal drums, graveyard basslines and clubland theatricality with punk still visible underneath. It is less polished than later gothic rock and more atmospheric than straight horror punk. The sound feels like L.A. punk, batcave fashion and underground theatre meeting in a room lit by strobes and cheap fog.
History
Los Angeles bands such as Christian Death, 45 Grave, Kommunity FK, Voodoo Church and Super Heroines defined the American deathrock scene, while TSOL, Theatre of Ice, Alien Sex Fiend and Specimen connected it to gothic punk and batcave culture. The style shaped goth's early visual and musical vocabulary while keeping the scrape and immediacy of punk. Later revivals kept deathrock distinct from smoother darkwave by emphasizing danger, camp and raw guitars.
