Gothic rock pulled toward synthesizers and atmosphere: songs built on layered keyboards and drum machines rather than guitar, with minor-key tonality, introspective bleakness and romantic sorrow. Ethereal or mournful vocals over cold electronic washes. Dark, dreamy, melancholic and synthetic, hovering between rock body and ambient haze.
History
Grew from new wave and post-punk in the early-to-mid 80s, with Clan of Xymox bridging guitars and synths. A second wave in 1990s Germany (Diary of Dreams, Deine Lakaien, the Frozen Autumn) made it a defined scene, while US label Projekt fostered an ethereal strand (Lycia). It fed the broader dark-electronic and neo-goth undergrounds.
