The coldest, most synth-draped wing of gothic metal, descended from 1980s post-punk and darkwave: icy analog-style pads, sequenced synths and piano lacing midpaced, often downtuned guitar riffs at funereal-to-mid 70-120 BPM. Vocals favour mournful clean baritones, breathy whispers and theatrical declamation, sometimes paired with operatic female lines, all bathed in cavernous reverb. Mood is the dominant ingredient — autumnal melancholy, romantic despair and elegant gloom over brute heaviness — with melodic, minor-key songwriting closer to The Sisters of Mercy and Dead Can Dance than to thrash.
History
The style emerged where early-1990s gothic/doom metal bands absorbed the 1980s darkwave aesthetic of cold synths and post-punk melancholy. Switzerland's Lacrimosa, founded by Tilo Wolff out of a literal darkwave project, fused classical strings, gothic croon and metal guitars on 'Inferno' (1995) and 'Elodia' (1999), with Anne Nurmi adding icy keyboards. Finland became a stronghold: Sentenced and the gothic 'love metal' of HIM shared DNA with the genre, while The 69 Eyes drifted from punk toward synth-shadowed 'goth 'n' roll'. Germany's ASP and Lacrimas Profundere, plus the broader darkwave-to-metal current on labels like Hall of Sermon and Nuclear Blast, carried the sound through the 2000s — a melancholic, keyboard-forward gothic metal prizing atmosphere and elegance over aggression.
