A brooding, minor-key offshoot fusing catchy synth songcraft with gothic-rock and darkwave atmosphere. Stark drum-machine patterns, pulsing sequencers, and cold analog-modeled synths frame baritone or breathy vocals drowned in chorus, delay, and reverb. Melodic enough to hum, bleak enough to haunt.
History
Descends from early-80s acts like the harsher side of Depeche Mode and goth-electronic crossovers, but the named style coalesced around 2009 as a darkwave revival took hold. Cold Cave's Love Comes Close (2009) anchored a US scene, with Light Asylum, The Soft Moon, and Canada's Kontravoid extending the mood into the 2010s and beyond.
