Murder ballads and death-haunted narratives set to brooding, gothic rock - menacing basslines, biblical imagery, sparse piano or organ, and surges of dissonant noise. The narrator is often a killer, a condemned man, or a ghost; the storytelling is literary and obsessive. Vocals range from a low croon to a howl, and the mood stays funereal, theatrical, and morally unflinching.
History
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds defined the form with the death-row epic 'The Mercy Seat' (1988) and the all-murder-ballads concept album 'Murder Ballads' (1996), drawing on a mythic American South of spirituals and Delta blues. Tom Waits' junkyard noir and 16 Horsepower's gothic gospel-rock pushed it deeper into shadow, and later acts like Murder by Death and Mark Lanegan carried the storytelling forward.
