Dark Pop
tagStarted 2011Peak 2014-2021Last big hit still active
Moody, brooding pop in minor keys: atmospheric synths, reverb-drenched vocals, slow pulsing percussion and themes of anxiety, loss and obsession. It keeps pop's catchiness but darkens the palette—shadowy production, ominous low end, haunted choruses—turning hooks toward dread and introspection rather than uplift, often with a gothic, cinematic sheen.
History
Emerging in the early 2010s as a counter to bright EDM-pop, Lana Del Rey's noir balladry and Banks' icy R&B-tinged electronics set the tone. Lorde and Halsey carried minor-key menace toward the charts, and Billie Eilish pushed whispered, sinister dark pop fully mainstream by 2019, cementing brooding atmosphere as a commercial pop force.
