Dark Folk Blues is blues-inflected roots music built around dread, guilt, violence, death, spiritual unease and minor-key atmosphere. It may use acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, harmonica, drones or spare percussion, but the emotional palette is shadowed and narrative-heavy. The style overlaps murder ballads, gothic country, alt-folk and outsider blues, making the blues feel less like a club groove and more like a haunted story.

History

Blues and folk traditions have long carried death ballads, prison songs, devil imagery and apocalyptic religious language. Modern dark roots artists such as Nick Cave, 16 Horsepower, The Handsome Family, Wovenhand, Gillian Welch, Mark Lanegan and Otis Taylor reframed those materials for alternative audiences. The best examples avoid costume drama by grounding atmosphere in strong songs, rhythmic restraint and believable menace.
