Dark Electro is electro-industrial with a heavier, colder, more horror-tinged atmosphere. It uses distorted or processed vocals, minor-key synth sequences, mechanical percussion, soundtrack dread, and club rhythm, often sounding less punk-shouted than EBM and less guitar-driven than industrial rock. The style is the shadowy bridge from Skinny Puppy and Front Line Assembly to aggrotech.
History
The roots lie in late-1980s and early-1990s electro-industrial, especially Canadian and European scenes around Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Klinik, yelworC, Mentallo & The Fixer, Project Pitchfork, Wumpscut, Velvet Acid Christ, Suicide Commando, Hocico, and Das Ich. Dark electro later fed aggrotech and harsh EBM, while keeping a more atmospheric and gothic production identity. It remains a reference point for dark electronic artists who want menace without metal guitars.
