Dark Disco is slow-to-mid-tempo disco and indie-dance music with a shadowy, nocturnal, post-punk, EBM, or psychedelic edge. It uses chugging basslines, minor-key synths, cold drum machines, guitar delay, and dubby space rather than bright disco gloss. The mood is warehouse, basement, late-night drive, or occult mirrorball.

History

The style draws from cosmic disco, Italo, Belgian new beat, post-punk, industrial, electroclash, and indie-dance selectors who preferred tension over sparkle. Black Devil Disco Club, The Hacker, Miss Kittin, Ivan Smagghe, Optimo, Headman, Daniel Avery, Red Axes, Curses, Jennifer Cardini, Rebolledo, and Zombi all connect to different corners of the sound. It remains a common tag for slow club sets that bridge rock attitude, synth darkness, and disco structure.
