History

Dark Club grew from 1980s goth/industrial nights, alternative club culture, Wax Trax!-era industrial dance, European EBM, and 1990s darkwave/futurepop. Depeche Mode, Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Ministry, KMFDM, Nine Inch Nails, Project Pitchfork, VNV Nation, Covenant, Apoptygma Berzerk, Suicide Commando, Hocico, and Blutengel all became durable staples. The tag remains practical because DJs mix these styles together more often than genre maps separate them.
