Weimar-era cabaret and vaudeville dragged into rock's gutter: pounding piano or stomping acoustic strum, accordion, brass and waltz-time theatrics topped by histrionic, vibrato-heavy vocals. Lyrically lurid—murder, sideshow, sex, suicide—delivered with greasepaint irony and burlesque menace. Punk attitude in corset-and-top-hat costume, half torch song, half carnival.
History
Pioneered in 1989 by London's the Tiger Lillies, who married Brechtian cabaret to gallows humor. Marc Almond carried torch-song darkness from his Soft Cell roots into the lineage. The style surged in the 2000s when Boston's Dresden Dolls coined 'Brechtian punk cabaret,' and acts like Rasputina, Voltaire and Jill Tracy gave it a theatrical underground following.
