Dangdut is Indonesian popular dance music known for tabla-like rhythms, Malay melodies, Indian film influence, electric guitar, flute, call-and-response hooks and socially direct lyrics. It can be moralistic, romantic, comic, political or openly sensual. Classic dangdut centers singers and live bands; later dangdut koplo pushed faster drums, regional accents and viral dance energy. It remains one of Indonesia's strongest mass-pop languages.

History

Dangdut coalesced in the 1970s as artists such as Rhoma Irama and Elvy Sukaesih turned Malay orchestra and Indian-influenced pop into a modern Indonesian style. Rhoma's Soneta group gave it rock theatrics and Islamic-social commentary, while television, cassettes and live shows made it national. Later singers such as Inul Daratista, Ayu Ting Ting, Via Vallen and Nella Kharisma updated the style for controversy, karaoke and online audiences.
