History

Digital dancehall's deejay style fused with hip-hop as Jamaican artists chased the US market in the 90s. Shaggy's crossover paved the road; Sean Paul's 'Get Busy' (2003) became the first dancehall song to top the Hot 100, opening the floodgates for Beenie Man, Elephant Man and Sean Paul collabs. Brooklyn's Busta Rhymes, son of Jamaican immigrants, threaded patois into rap throughout.
