History

Grew from mid-'70s soul acts who leaned uptempo for the clubs without surrendering songcraft — Sister Sledge under Chic, Donna Summer's gospel-rooted belting, Chaka Khan's dance sides. It kept soul's vocal heart at the center of the dancefloor while disco machinery hardened around it, threading into the early-'80s R&B mainstream.
