Dance-R&B Pop
tagStarted 1989Peak 2001-2013Last big hit still active
R&B-rooted vocals and swing married to a four-on-the-floor dance engine: melismatic runs and pocket grooves over club kicks, finger-snaps and synth pads. Smoother and more vocal-led than EDM-pop, it keeps soul phrasing and harmony but pushes tempo and low-end for the floor. Slick, sensual, body-moving.
History
Traces to late-80s new jack swing and Janet Jackson's rhythm-pop, then crossed fully into clubs in the 2000s when producers like Stargate and RedOne built dancefloor records for R&B singers. Rihanna, Usher and Ne-Yo defined the lane, blending uptempo pop hooks with R&B vocal craft across the 2000s and 2010s.
