Dance-Punk is punk rhythm made club-functional: scratchy guitars, disco hi-hats, funk bass, shouted hooks, cowbell, synth stabs and a tense relationship between irony and bodily release. It descends from post-punk and mutant disco but became a 2000s indie-dance language through DFA, dance-rock clubs and festival stages. The sound works when it keeps punk's edge while letting the rhythm section make movement unavoidable.

History

Gang of Four, ESG, Liquid Liquid and Talking Heads showed early ways to fuse punk minimalism with funk, disco and dance-floor repetition. The 2000s revival centered around The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, !!!, Radio 4, Liars and Le Tigre, with New York scenes and DFA production giving it a recognizable pulse. Dance-punk fed indie sleaze, electroclash, nu-rave and later post-punk revival because it made angular rock useful for DJs again.
